Hogmanay: A Tradition for Looking Ahead

What’s The Tea with 4D? 🍵

Hello Tea Time friends! I hope this newsletter email finds you doing well. I hope that you had a restful Thanksgiving and that you are spending some solid down time before the full blown hustle and bustle is upon us in mere weeks!

I have just now started putting in thought to the holiday hubbub. But something I have already been thinking of and something I truly cherish as a tradition this time of year is thinking about the new year. New Year means new aspirations as far as I am concerned. How about you? Do you reflect on the year and all that has transpired and then spend time thinking about what you want to aspire to in the coming year?

Many people call these activities planning their resolutions. To be honest, I have always found that word a little somber for the occasion. Honestly, there is something truly wonderful about having an open horizon to contemplate. You can apply your resolve on to the things you want to accomplish but how about making a little space for dreaming those plans up first? Hence the word ASPIRATIONS. What do you aspire to do in 2026? How fun to let your imagination run a little wild!

Twelve years ago, I was just meeting my husband for the first time. One of the first things he said to me was to wish me a ‘Happy Hogmanay!” I had no idea what that meant. LOL. I came to find out later that Hogmanay is the Scottish version of our New Year. The Scots celebrate it with gatherings and street parties and the annual singing of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ which was penned by the Scot, Robert Burns.

This photo made me laugh. Who wouldn’t love to see folks dressed in Viking garb while parading through the streets with torches?

Hogmanay traditionally includes “first footing,” where the first person to cross your threshold in the new year is believed to set the tone for the months to come. I like to imagine that the first one across that inner threshold is me — the version of myself I’m growing toward. And I use that to inspire my aspirations. Who and what will I aspire to in 2026?

How about you? What will you aspire to in this coming year? Whatever it is, I hope you let yourself dream about it and get creative with this magical thing we call life. If I don’t see you before, Happy New Year and Happy Hogmanay!
